The Best SIMPLE IRA Providers for Small Businesses (2026)

In 2026, for most of the small business owners looking for a SIMPLE IRA provider, the best SIMPLE IRA providers are Fidelity and Ascensus. Fidelity has no fees to either the employer or employee and includes a full brokerage menu. Ascensus is the only major provider with an entirely online setup that goes live in about 2 business days. The remaining providers include Charles Schwab, Merrill Edge and T. Rowe Price. Each may have their own niche or advantage depending on your preferences. Therefore, the best choice for you will depend on your priorities such as cost (Fidelity), time (Ascensus) or one of many possible situations where another choice makes sense.

What are the best SIMPLE IRA providers in 2026?

There are five good options for covering almost all small businesses: Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Merrill Edge, T. Rowe Price and Ascensus. Fidelity offers the most for your money at $0 employer fees, $0 employee account fees and full brokerage services but requires the employer adoption paperwork to be sent via mail.[1] Ascensus, which administers the SIMPLE IRA that features Vanguard investments, is the simplest option for setting up a plan. This will take approximately 20 minutes online with e-signature and typically takes about 2 business days to go live after being set up.[5] If you have never done a plan of this type before then start with What Is a SIMPLE IRA? and come back to decide which company would be the best fit.

Which SIMPLE IRA provider has the lowest fees?

Fidelity and Charles Schwab tie on price, offering full brokerages with menu items including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, and both charge $0 to the employer and $0 as employee account fees.[1][2] Merrill Edge offers no fees for either an employer or employee to set up and administer a plan.[3] Therefore, all fee differences exist only within the employee side of the other two options. T. Rowe Price charges each participant $20 per year for their services but waive it when the employee switches to e-delivery of documents.[4] Ascensus charges each participant $20 quarterly plus 0.03% per year on the first $100,000 of assets.[5] On a ten person team, Ascensus' employee fees come to $800 per year across that group prior to the asset charge (which is paid from the retirement account balance of each employee). That is the true cost of skipping the mail.

Which SIMPLE IRA provider is easiest to set up?

Ascensus is the only company listed above that has a totally web-based process. You go to retireapps.com, set up your application in about 20 minutes, e-sign and the plan is typically live within about 2 business days. No printing or mailing required.[5] Merrill Edge is second on the list with an online account opening flow as well as telephone support for its account opening flow and there is no mailing step. However, Merrill publishes no turnaround time for establishing their plans.[3] Fidelity, Schwab and T. Rowe Price all use a paper based method of establishing an employer plan, signed in ink and mailed. As such, processing times can vary greatly due to postal service delivery timeframes, i.e., days to weeks depending upon mail speed and processing timeframes. This issue becomes even more critical near the end of each year, since a new SIMPLE IRA generally must be established by October 1 to count for the current year. A full explanation of the calendar is contained in our SIMPLE IRA deadline guide.

How does each provider actually establish the plan?

The paperwork differs more than you might expect. Providers split into two categories, which use either the IRS model forms or their own prototype documents, and this difference between the two sets of documents is discussed in Form 5304 vs. 5305-SIMPLE.

Fidelity: best value

Fidelity's SIMPLE IRA adoption process is only available via paper and U.S. Mail. Everything after the employer adoption is electronic at Fidelity: employees open their own accounts online, and all contributions move through Fidelity's Plan Manager electronic funding service or payroll ACH. Fidelity also does not accept contributions made by check.[1] The brokerage services that are available to the employees participating in your SIMPLE IRA plan include the full brokerage menu offered by Fidelity with no account fees. The IRAPilot wizard creates a completed version of your Fidelity adoption packet, you sign it in ink and send it via U.S. Mail, and you hand your employees their enrollment instructions.

Charles Schwab

Schwab utilizes its company-specific account setup documents (Account Application, Adoption Agreement and Employer's Agreement) and will not accept the IRS model plans.[2] The set-up process with Schwab is all on paper while employee enrollment occurs online, and contributions go in by transmittal form or ACH through MoneyLink. From an economic standpoint it mirrors Fidelity: $0 for everyone and a full brokerage menu. Pick this option if your business already banks or invests at Schwab.

Merrill Edge

Merrill opens the employer's plan via an online account-open process with phone support, so there is no mail-in step. Merrill also does not charge either the employer or employees any setup or admin fees for using this service.[3] The contributions are submitted through Merrill's E-Contribs portal on each payroll cycle. Since all of these accounts reside in the same Bank of America ecosystem, it fits their business customers as well.

T. Rowe Price

T. Rowe Price establishes the plan formally on paper using an Information and Services Agreement and a form from the IRS (Form 5305-SIMPLE), then accepts contributions online via ACH through Plan Sponsor Web.[4] The employer pays nothing. Employees pay $20 per year for their account, waived if they elect e-delivery of documents, and may only invest in T. Rowe Price's fund offerings. Choose it when you specifically want that fund family.

Ascensus (Vanguard funds): easiest setup

Ascensus runs the SIMPLE IRA that features Vanguard investments. It is the one route with no paper at all, so this is your choice if you are averse to paper: sign up at retireapps.com for this plan and be set up online within approximately 20 minutes. It typically takes about 2 business days after completion to go live.[5] Employees can only invest in Vanguard funds, and they pay $20 per participant per quarter plus 0.03% per year on the first $100,000. The employer base fee is $0. Use this option if the calendar is tight or you prefer Vanguard funds but never want to touch a stamp.

Which providers should you rule out?

Several familiar names are no longer practical homes for a small-business SIMPLE IRA. Vanguard is no longer offering a SIMPLE IRA directly. Its individual small-business SIMPLE business has transitioned to Ascensus, which explains why the Vanguard fund option on this list will take you through retireapps.com.[5] Fintech 401(k) platforms that market to small businesses aggressively do not have a SIMPLE IRA product available at all, they sell 401(k) plans. Therefore, when searching for a SIMPLE on these platforms it ends in a sales call for a different plan. Edward Jones has an annual account fee per IRA of $40 and therefore places itself behind the $0 options above prior to evaluating advisor compensation.[6] Raymond James offers SIMPLE IRAs only through their financial advisors. As such, it fits businesses that already have a Raymond James advisor relationship rather than owners setting a plan up themselves.[7]

How should you choose between them?

Choose based on what matters most to you. No single provider wins every category. If you place importance on your employees' balances, then Fidelity is the best value, since nobody pays fees and employees have access to an entire brokerage menu, at the cost of one trip to the mailbox. If you value speed, Ascensus provides the quickest set-up process and is the only completely online option, at the cost of employee fees and limited investment options (one fund family). Schwab and Merrill provide solutions for companies that are already inside either of these ecosystems. T. Rowe Price fits a deliberate preference for its funds. Regardless of which provider you choose, a SIMPLE IRA from any of the five is a qualifying plan that exempts you from state auto-IRA mandates, covered in our CalSavers exemption guide. IRAPilot's wizard allows you to compare all five providers while also preparing the filled Fidelity packet for free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SIMPLE IRA provider for a small business?

Fidelity is the best value for most small businesses because it costs nothing on either side ($0 employer fees, $0 employee account fees) as well as access to a complete brokerage menu. However, there is an employer adoption process that involves paper and mail, so start early enough. If you need the plan live this week, Ascensus is the only fully online setup and is typically live in about 2 business days. Employee fees there are $20 per quarter plus 0.03% per year on the first $100,000.

Does Vanguard offer a SIMPLE IRA?

You do not get it from Vanguard directly. The SIMPLE IRA featuring Vanguard investments is administered by Ascensus and can be set up online at retireapps.com. Participants invest in Vanguard funds and pay the participant fees to Ascensus.

How much does a SIMPLE IRA cost an employer?

At Fidelity, Schwab, Merrill Edge and T. Rowe Price the employer pays $0 in provider fees. At Ascensus the employer base fee is $0. Your real cost is the required contribution itself, which is either a match of up to 3% of pay for employees who defer, or 2% of pay for all eligible employees.

Can I switch SIMPLE IRA providers later?

Yes. The plan may move to another custodian, and under SECURE 2.0 an employer also has the ability to replace a SIMPLE IRA with certain 401(k) plans mid-year. Most small businesses simply select a low-fee provider first, so there is no reason to make a change.

The Bottom Line

In 2026, the best SIMPLE IRA providers are Fidelity for value and Ascensus for setup time, with Schwab, Merrill Edge and T. Rowe Price each fitting a narrower case. Employers pay $0 almost everywhere, so compare employee fees and investment menus first, then work backward from the October 1 deadline: mail-based setups need weeks. Ascensus needs days. IRAPilot provides an easy-to-use wizard that compares all five providers and prepares the Fidelity packet for free.
